Olorgesailie, Lake Magadi & Entasopia Expedition

Early-human stone tools, an alkaline lake and Maasai life in the southern Rift Valley.

Travel beyond Kenya's classic safari routes on a three-day expedition through the southern Great Rift Valley, where human prehistory, extraordinary geology and living culture meet.

The journey begins at Olorgesailie Prehistoric Site, one of Kenya's most significant archaeological landscapes, and follows the Rift south to the alkaline flats of Lake Magadi. From there it continues to Entasopia and Nguruman, where waterfalls, rivers, dramatic escarpments and Maasai communities add an entirely different dimension.

This is not simply a sightseeing tour. It is a chance to explore how early humans lived with their environments, how geology shapes a landscape, and how archaeological heritage connects with the cultures living here today, with knowledgeable local guides and cultural hosts bringing it all to life.

What makes it different

Human prehistory

See how stone tools, fossils, sediments and ancient environments help researchers reconstruct the human past at Olorgesailie.

Rift Valley geology

Read the volcanic, tectonic and geothermal forces that built the southern Rift Valley and Lake Magadi.

Birdlife & biodiversity

Guided birdwatching and nature walks around the lake and its hot-spring habitats.

Adventure

Hike to Entasopia Waterfall and explore the river below it, with swimming and rafting in the right season.

Day by day

  1. Olorgesailie: walk in the footsteps of early humans

Nairobi → Olorgesailie Prehistoric Site → Lake Magadi

Leave Nairobi in the morning and drive south along the scenic Magadi Road, down into the Rift Valley. At Olorgesailie, an expert-led introduction covers the site's geology, archaeology and ancient environments.

Olorgesailie is internationally recognised for its exceptional concentration of Acheulean handaxes, preserved alongside fossils and lake deposits that record the environments early humans lived in. Rather than just viewing artefacts, you learn how archaeologists reconstruct past behaviour from stone tools, bones and sediments.

After lunch, continue to Lake Magadi, a landscape of alkaline flats, volcanic hills and huge horizons, for birdwatching, a nature walk and sunset over the lake before dinner at camp.

    At Olorgesailie

    • Acheulean handaxes and stone-tool technology
    • Excavations and how archaeologists record them
    • Fossils of extinct animals
    • Ancient lake and wetland environments
    • How climate and landscape shaped early human life
Stay: Campsite, Lake Magadi areaMeals: Lunch & dinner
  2. Lake Magadi: geology, birdlife & the road to Nguruman

    Lake Magadi → Nguruman

Wake to sunrise over the lake and set out on a guided nature and birdwatching walk in the cool morning light, when waterbirds gather along the shore. Your guide explains how volcanic activity, hot springs and evaporation created this alkaline landscape, and walks you out to the hot springs on the lake edge.

Then continue to the communities around Nguruman and Entasopia. As the scenery changes, your guide introduces pastoralism, water and community life, and how Maasai families have adapted to a semi-arid land: the background for tomorrow's cultural visit.

    Along the way

    • Sunrise birdwatching on the lakeshore
    • Hot-spring and geology walk
    • Pastoralism and traditional uses of natural resources
    • Indigenous environmental knowledge
Stay: Campsite or lodge, Nguruman areaMeals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
  3. Entasopia: waterfalls, wilderness & Maasai culture

Entasopia → Maasai community → Nairobi

After breakfast, hike with a local guide along trails to Entasopia Waterfall, at a pace that lets you take in the plants, birds and geology on the way. Then explore the river below the falls, with time for a swim or rafting when water levels are right.

Later, meet members of the local Maasai community for a cultural experience built around conversation and mutual respect: storytelling, traditional food, beadwork, songs and talk about Maasai life today. Visits are arranged directly with the community so that the money stays local.

A farewell lunch of traditional dishes rounds off the journey before the drive back to Nairobi.

    Today's experiences
