Nairobi Archaeology & Wildlife Day Tour

Human origins at the National Museum, rhinos below the skyline, Karura Forest and the Giraffe Centre, in one day.

What if you could explore millions of years of human history, Kenya's wildlife, indigenous forest and modern conservation, all in one day?

This day expedition links four of Nairobi's best experiences: wildlife in Nairobi National Park, human origins at the Nairobi National Museum, forest ecology in Karura Forest and giraffe conservation at the Giraffe Centre. Rather than visiting attractions one by one, your guide tells the story that connects them.

It is the perfect first day in Kenya, a stopover or a free day in the city, and a fresh way for Kenyan families and school groups to rediscover Nairobi.

What makes it different

Human origins

At the museum, explore the evidence of our deep past, from early ancestors to stone tools.

Wildlife

Rhinos, lions and giraffes on a sunrise game drive with the city skyline behind.

Forest

Waterfalls, caves and indigenous trees in Karura, Nairobi's green heart.

Conservation

Meet Rothschild's giraffes up close and learn how they are being protected.

How the day unfolds

  1. Nairobi National Park: sunrise safari below the skyline

Your guide collects you from your hotel before the city wakes for an early game drive in Nairobi National Park, which the Kenya Wildlife Service calls the world's only wildlife capital.

Look for black rhino, lion, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and hundreds of bird species, while your guide explains the park's ecology, predators and conservation story. Sightings are never guaranteed, but early morning is the best time for both wildlife and photography.

  2. Nairobi National Museum: a journey into Kenya's deep past

The heart of the day. Shift from living wildlife to the evidence left by our ancestors over immense spans of time, with a guided visit focused on human evolution, fossils and prehistoric stone tools.

Your guide connects the galleries to Kenya's wider archaeological landscape and to discoveries at Lake Turkana, Koobi Fora and Olorgesailie. Before Kenya became famous for wildlife, it was already one of the world's most important places for understanding human origins.

  3. Karura Forest: Nairobi's green heart

After lunch, swap the city for indigenous forest. A guided walk along Karura's trails leads to waterfalls, caves and streams, with birdlife and native trees along the way, and the story of how this forest was saved for the city.

  4. Giraffe Centre: conservation up close

End the day at the Giraffe Centre, meeting Rothschild's giraffes at eye level from the feeding platform and learning about the work being done to protect them, before the drive back to your hotel by around 5:30 PM.
