What we learnt from our first corporate trek

Paleo Trails Africa teamJanuary 25, 20261 min read

When Daniel called us to ask if we could host his team of ten for a corporate offsite, our first question was: "What do you want them to get out of it?" His answer: "I want them to remember something other than a conference room."

We planned a three-day Rift Valley escarpment walk: day one descending the escarpment wall, day two walking across the Mara Plateau, and a final morning on the riverine forest trail before lunch and transfers back to Nairobi.

The logistics were different from our usual guest treks. We needed a private camp setup, dietary requirements for the group, a mix of fitness levels to manage, and above all the expectation that work conversations would happen on the trail rather than in a meeting room.

What surprised us was how the group dynamic shifted. By the end of day one, the hierarchies had dissolved. The CEO was helping the intern across a stream crossing. Product discussions happened naturally around the campfire. By day three, people were talking about coming back with their families.

We have run three corporate treks since then, and each one has taught us something new about how groups function when you remove the usual environment. A ridge at sunrise, it turns out, is worth more than any whiteboard session we have ever seen.

Stories are good. Walking them is better.
